Beach Boogie 1999

...a5 ...a6 ...a5, 6, 7, 8

Was it good or what? I think I can safely say; ‘ask anyone who was there to find out what a great time was had by all at Beach Boogie.’ Except, perhaps, the plumber who had to investigate something fishy at Chalet 75.

The weather stayed fine most of the time, except for the day or so immediately following the rain dance performed by Rena and Co. Rena was singled out as the ringleader and suitably punished.

Running the dance camp for a whole week this time enabled us to include an even wider variety of dance styles than usual. A major addition to the teaching team was Gillian who opened people’s eyes to an exciting variety of latin styles. This was an experimental addition, but judging from the positive feedback we have received, there is a good chance that she will be back next year. Many thanks also to Derek, Linda, Sophie, Mark, Graham and Heather for their contributions to the teaching (and to Heather for her contributions in many other areas besides).

Most people would have thought Rena’s abilities would be brought down to more normal levels with the slight handicap of an arm in plaster. But she amazed us all again and only required a stunt double in the main aerials. So a very big thank-you to Linda, Ellie and Sheila for filling in at such short notice.

Every evening went with a swing with a storming array of tunes played by DJs Graham and Ken of ‘Jive Party’. In the theme nights people went to great lengths to look the part. One or two looked a little bit too much at home in their gangster outfits, and it was said that I didn’t need to wear anything different from usual to look like a clown. Due largely to Rena’s wrist (great excuse), we had to turn to the public for cabaret acts in both splurges — and the results were amazing! Can’t wait to see the video. The funny feet competition turned into a complete riot — very much encouraged by Rena, may I say. And finally on the evening entertainment front — congratulations to Mark and Ellie for a top top class performance to win our first national aerials championships.

A very special thank-you goes to Debz for her amazingly efficient administration and her entertaining and impressive compering during the cabarets. Last, but not least, our thanks to Neil for administration and videoing, Asif for videoing and Mark for getting his tools out.

A fuller picture of events will be on show when the video is produced. Anyone who didn’t order it at Beach Boogie can use this form to order a copy.

We have also printed a few more T-Shirts. If you want one, the order form is here.

Editorial comment: Andy would just like to say that he was an innocent bystander in many of the acts of bad behavior which occurred at Beach Boogie. Occasionally he joined in a little bit, but only under heavy peer pressure. (And of course we all believe him, don’t we?! — Ed.)
