The 2nd National Aerials Championships

This competition was introduced in last year’s Beach Boogie and proved to be an instant success. Competitors of all levels of experience performed extremely well, with Mark and Ellie of Woking, Surrey taking the title and also the nicest trophy ever awarded — the Beach Boogie ‘Sun Dance Pig’.

Hosted by past UK Airsteps Champions, this again promises to be a memorable event. We welcome both serious competitors and also those who wish to have a go just for fun. So this is your chance to fling each other through the ceiling, slide along the floor on your back and generally break all the etiquette rules of dancing. All partnered dance styles are allowed, such as Modern Jive, Rock ’n’ Roll, Lindy Hop, (or even Merengue, Eskimo style).

However a few rules will be needed:—

• You can separate from your partner for no more than 30% of each dance.
• If more than 5 couples enter there will be heats. These will involve 2 couples at a time dancing to a lively piece of music of our choice, such as Rock Around The Clock by Bill Hailey.
• Finalists will choose their own music and may again freestyle or present choreographed sequences.
• All competitors must have a pulse. This rule has had to be added following rumours that one of last year’s competitors was inflatable.

A few tips for competitors:—

• We recommend that you mainly freestyle in the heats as this should allow more musical interpretation.
• We also recommend that you find your partner as early as possible (such as now). But if you’re in it just for the fun, maybe you’ll find a willing volunteer at Beach Boogie.
• Don’t be over ambitious with the aerials you choose — use moves well within your capabilities and practise them as often as possible. This should allow you to relax and enjoy your performance.
• One of the judges at the competition will be Andy or Rena — humour will always score highly in their eyes!
• Judging will be based on technique, musicality, skill level, and entertainment. We may also be influenced by how gorgeous we think you are!

Winners will receive the title of National Aerials Champions, and will have to care lovingly for the Beach Boogie ‘Sun Dance Pig’ for a whole year.
